Our Partners in Minnesota

We've worked with the following partners in this state to expand access to reproductive health care.

Current Partners

Local partner
Pro-Choice Minnesota

NIRH is working with Our Justice and Pro-Choice Minnesota to run a campaign to move municipal funds from the City of Minneapolis towards reproductive health care. For more than fifty years, these two groups have been leaders in the state fighting for reproductive rights in Minnesota. The campaign will increase access to abortion, and public awareness and simultaneously help to decrease stigma surrounding abortion care. NIRH will bring its expertise from other municipal funding campaigns to support this work.

Local partner
Asian American Organizing Project

NIRH invests in movement-building in order to create sustainable strength and power for those most impacted by barriers to reproductive health. In 2022, NIRH is supporting Asian American Organizing Project’s Gender Justice Program, which works to build the next generation of young Asian, Pacific Islander, and Desi American (APIDA) gender and reproductive justice leaders, organizers, and socially conscious community members. Together, we will focus on building AAOP’s base of young Asian APIDA leaders through educational events, organizing, and resource sharing. This cultivation of young people power will propel and support AAOP’s ongoing work on comprehensive sex education, while fighting to protect and expand abortion access in MN. During the 2022 legislative session AAOP is working with the UnRestrict MN coalition to stop proposed abortion bans and to advance The Patients’ Right to Know Act that will help protect abortion care and ensure patients are receiving medically accurate information. Additionally, with NIRH’s support, 2022 will also mark AAOP's growth toward canvassing for reproductive freedom and building a narrative campaign on reproductive justice and abortion with young Asian community members and supporters; their goal is to build towards concrete policy impact in 2023 and 2024.

Local partner
Whole Woman’s Health Alliance Minnesota

Minnesota is a state with the potential to address a core inequity in access to reproductive health care – cost. In 2022, NIRH is supporting Whole Woman’s Health Alliance, a non-profit organization committed to providing holistic reproductive care for its patients, to educate legislators on the implications of low Medicaid reimbursement rates on abortion provision in Minnesota. The purpose of the initiative is to establish equitable reimbursement rates that allow providers to extend care into the second trimester while also remaining financially viable, providing access to underserved populations, with a direct impact on low-income people and people of color.  In 2021, NIRH supported Whole Woman’s Health Alliance, and Whole Woman’s Health of the Twin Cities’ new clinic in Bloomington, Minnesota, as they engaged in multiple strategies to keep patients and providers safe, create a culture of respect and support for abortion access, and fight abortion stigma in the state. The collaboration between NIRH and WWHA will included pursuing policy change and efforts to build a sustainable community to support abortion access in Bloomington.

Past Partners

Local partner
Gender Justice

While support for abortion access is high among Minnesotans, most are unaware of the many legal, financial, and logistical barriers that exist in the state. In 2019, NIRH partnered with Gender Justice, a legal and policy advocacy organization dedicated to advancing gender equity through the law, to conduct a series of trainings with local policymakers and community leaders in cities that are home to abortion clinics: Duluth, Minneapolis, and St. Paul. The goal of these trainings was to identify community-based solutions that will increase access to abortion and work with local leaders to move them forward. This project involved collaboration with All* Above All.

Local partner
The Beautywell Project

In 2019, NIRH partnered with The Beautywell Project to launch the Young Women’s Leadership Initiative (YWLI), which is preparing a cohort of young Muslim women from Somali communities to become local advocates in the Twin Cities. With support from NIRH, the cohort had the opportunity to learn about their own reproductive health and well-being and to advocate for their community members on issues that matter to them. In 2020, NIRH supported  The Beautywell Project in expanding the YWLI to different Somali-majority neighborhoods in the Twin Cities, with a specific focus on environmental justice and sexual and reproductive health and well-being. The participants also learned how to best use social media as an advocacy tool for their communities.
