Our Partners in Maryland
We've worked with the following partners in this state to expand access to reproductive health care.
NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland
NIRH is partnering with NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland to advocate for Reproductive Justice Commissions in one city and one municipality in their state. Modeled on the successful campaign that established an RJ Commission in Atlanta, also an NIRH partnership initiative, these RJ Commissions will consist of community-based activists, direct service providers, policy advocates, and others with lived experiences who will develop policy recommendations to promote positive sexual and reproductive health outcomes in their communities. As envisioned, the RJ Commissions have the potential to address important local issues such as the harmful and deceptive practices of anti-abortion pregnancy centers, supporting pregnant and parenting youth, promoting menstrual equity, and addressing the pregnancy-related needs of incarcerated or detained individuals. The project’s goal is to work with local government to establish the RJ Commissions, recruit members, and sustain them as they work towards reproductive justice on the local level in Maryland.
In 2009, NARAL Pro-Choice Maryland (Baltimore) successfully advocated for first-in-the-nation passage of ordinances requiring crisis pregnancy centers to disclose the limited nature of their services in Baltimore City and Montgomery County.
Advocates for Children and Youth
In 2005, Advocates for Children and Youth formed a statewide Medicaid Matters! Maryland Coalition and worked to fight cuts to Medicaid on the state and federal levels.
Healthy Teen Network
In 2010, the Healthy Teen Network (Baltimore, MD) hosted a roundtable in conjunction with the Baltimore Department of Health and local advocates to release their report on teen pregnancy in Baltimore. At the roundtable, participants also developed strategies to reduce teen pregnancy rates in the city.
