Statement by National Institute for Reproductive Health President Andrea Miller

“The National Institute for Reproductive Health is appalled that President Trump has appointed someone who said ‘contraception doesn’t work’ and flat-out opposes federal family planning funding to lead the federal program dedicated solely to providing low-income Americans with family planning resources.

“As Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population Affairs at HHS, the nation’s health department, Teresa Manning would be in charge of the Title X National Family Planning Program – a program with a $286 million in federal funds dedicated to providing contraception and reproductive health services to the millions of low-income American women who need it most. Like Charmaine Yoest, whom the president appointed on Friday to HHS, Manning is the antithesis of the leader our country needs to ensure that low-income women have access to family planning services. Contraception works; that is not an alternative fact. President Trump’s latest dangerous appointment puts millions of women at risk of losing access to the resources they need to determine whether and when to have children.”

The National Institute for Reproductive Health works across the country to increase access to reproductive health care by changing public policy, galvanizing public support, and normalizing women’s decisions to have abortions and use contraception.
