The National Institute for Reproductive Health works to increase access to reproductive health care by changing public policy, galvanizing public support, and normalizing women’s decisions to have abortions and use contraception. Since 2008, NIRH has provided direct grants and hands-on support to more than 145 reproductive health, rights, and justice organizations in 37 states and 50 localities across the country.
The National Institute for Reproductive Health Action Fund, with associated PAC’s and IEC, conducts nonpartisan advocacy and electoral engagement to advance reproductive health, rights and justice in states and cities across the country.
NIRH seeks a highly skilled development professional, with a strong track record in securing both individual and institutional funds, to provide strategic direction, leadership and management of all aspects of fundraising activities for both NIRH and the NIRH Action Fund.  Reporting to the President, the Chief Development Officer serves as a key leadership team member, provides an active voice in the organization’s strategic decision-making and will design and implement systems and protocols to ensure annual growth. The CDO will communicate NIRH’s vision to the Boards and potential funders and donors, build strong relationships with stakeholders and meet aggressive fundraising targets. The CDO will supervise a four-person staff.
Resource Development Strategy

  • Inculcate and promote an organization-wide culture of philanthropy and appreciation.
  • Create and implement a comprehensive development strategy for NIRH, the NIRH Action Fund and PAC, with clear annual financial goals for each.
  • Develop clear short-term and long-term plans for the development department, including a departmental budget and calendar and benchmarks to measure progress and success.
  • Direct and manage all fundraising activities, including the identification of new funding opportunities and the implementation of targeted strategies for each cohort.
  • Oversee major annual fundraising luncheon.
  • Ensure continued growth of institutional funder revenue.
  • Manage and expand the individual donor program and maintain a portfolio of high-level donors and prospects.
  • Engage the President and appropriate other staff and Board members in relationships with high net-worth individuals.
  • Partner with the finance department on organizational budgeting and revenue projections.
  • Partner with the communications department to ensure seamless and coordinated messaging, including the implementation of a digital fundraising progress
  • Evaluate possibilities for a planned giving program.
  • Create a program for enhanced Board and donor engagement, including but not limited to site visits, political education opportunities, parlor meetings, briefings and webinars.
  • Oversee operation of the database, including systems and protocols for acknowledgment procedures and metrics for reporting and evaluation.

Board Relationship Management

  • Partner with the President to establish and sustain strong relationships with Board members.
  • Support Board members in their fundraising roles and responsibilities.
  • Staff the Board Development Committee.
  • Work with the Governance/Nominations committee to develop and maintain a leadership pipeline.
  • Provide leadership for the orientation, support and the “onboarding” of new Board members in support of their fundraising responsibilities.

Management and Leadership

  • Serve as an ambassador and advocate for a philanthropic culture within the organization.
  • Serve as a strategic thought partner on the leadership team.
  • Collaborate and lead cross-departmental initiatives and projects.
  • Lead a four-person development team.
  • Provide weekly supervision for the development team, identify clear departmental and individual goals with benchmarks to monitor progress.

Personal Qualifications

  • 15+ years of development experience, including management responsibilities. 501(c)3 and 501c(4) fundraising experience preferred
  • Passion for and commitment to NIRH’s mission, fluency in the pertinent issues and the ability to articulate the case for support
  • Experience with the diverse components of comprehensive fundraising planning and implementation with solid experience in portfolio management and moves management
  • Demonstrated success in securing funding from individuals and foundations
  • Strong management skills with proven success in supervision and staff development
  • Experience in Board relations
  • Exceptional judgment, maturity and demonstrated leadership
  • Enthusiasm for working with a team, as well as the ability to drive new initiatives and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Impeccable attention to detail
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment
  • Experience with donor databases and other relevant technology- knowledge of Raiser’s Edge a plus
  • BA degree required; advanced degree preferable.
