Illinois

In partnership with a coalition of organizations in Illinois and with the support of NIRH and All* Above All, the Roger Baldwin Foundation of the ACLU of Illinois (ACLU of IL) successfully advocated for the 2017 passage of HB40, a bill that restores abortion coverage for people who qualify for Illinois’ state medical assistance programs, including Medicaid, and for certain state employees. This year, NIRH and All* Above All are supporting the ACLU of IL as it engages in advocacy to ensure that comprehensive abortion coverage becomes a reality for every Illinois patient and provider. In 2017, the Roger Baldwin Foundation of the ACLU of Illinois (ACLU of IL), as part of a coalition of organizations across the state, successfully advocated for the passage of HB 40, a bill that will remove discriminatory provisions from Illinois law that denied abortion coverage to women who depend on Medicaid and State Employee Health Insurance and affirm the right to abortion in Illinois. This victory was the result of a broad grassroots campaign and advocacy with key officials, providers, and lawmakers. In 2013, with the National Institute's support, the Roger Baldwin Foundation of the ACLU of Illinois led efforts to pass a Cook County resolution supporting public insurance coverage for abortion care. This project was conducted in partnership with the Chicago Abortion Fund.
