North Carolina

The North Carolina Survivors Union (NCSU) is a community-led organization comprised of people directly impacted by substance use. NIRH is supporting NCSU in an initiative focused on the rights of pregnant women, transgender men, and others who can become pregnant who use drugs or are coping with substance use disorder. NCSU is building relationships with key stakeholders, including social workers, judges, hospital workers, and harm reductionists, in order to train them on Medication Assisted Treatment and how they can do their jobs while acting in the best interests of both parents and babies. The long-term goal of this project is to build a sustainable coalition of health care workers, harm reductionists, reproductive rights advocates, and drug users to fill the critical gap between reproductive justice and those who are pregnant or parents who use drugs.
