Ohio

NIRH is continuing to work with NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, and Restoring Our Own Through Transformation (ROOTT), in partnership with other coalition members and City Councilmember Elizabeth Brown, to introduce a non-discrimination ordinance that will protect people who live and work in Columbus against retaliation for any reproductive healthcare decision, including but not limited to accessing abortion care, using birth control, having a baby, or lactation needs. This initiative builds on Columbus's progress toward realizing many of the policy objectives enshrined in the Local Reproductive Freedom Index’s Model City, including affording protections for people based on gender identity, protecting abortion clinics, and embracing comprehensive sexuality education curricula in schools and city health centers. In 2009, NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio won passage of a resolution by the Columbus City Council supporting fair hearings on the Ohio Prevention First Bill and developed educational resources for the community on available reproductive health services. NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio is working as part of a cohort of organizations in Ohio on a long-term initiative to develop and advance an abortion rights vision, engage a new and broad base of supporters, and reduce shame and stigma by publicly promoting the affirmative value of abortion in women's lives.
