NIRH and the Kentucky Health Justice Network (KHJN) partnered for several years on the Louisville Safety Zone campaign to establish a safety zone to ensure safe access for patients and clinic staff in the only city offering abortion care in the state. In 2021, the Safety Zone finally passed the Louisville Metro Council Because Louisville is so critical to abortion access in the region, it attracts a large crowd of extremist anti-abortion protestors who add to the financial, transportation, and other logistical and legal barriers that patients must already navigate to access abortion care. These dangers are only compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Together, NIRH and KHJN also acknowledged that public safety at abortion clinics is a matter of community care, given persistent police violence in communities across the country and particularly in Louisville.
