In 2020, NIRH is continuing its partnership with Hartford GYN Center, Health Equity Solutions, and NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut (NARAL CT) to promote proactive reproductive freedom legislation. NARAL CT and Hartford GYN Center are leading the way on measures to prevent anti-abortion pregnancy centers from engaging in deceptive and harmful advertising, and to ensure that abortion is accessible and covered by insurance. Health Equity Solutions, in keeping with its core mission, is promoting health care policies intended to address racial disparities in health care access and outcomes in Connecticut, including Medicaid-covered access to doulas. Through this work and by strengthening and broadening their coalition, NARAL CT, Hartford GYN Center, and Health Equity Solutions are committed to ensuring that Connecticut remains a leading state for reproductive freedom and to ending the inequities in reproductive health care access that fall along sharp racial and socioeconomic divides. This project involves collaboration with SiX. In 2019, Hartford GYN Center, NARAL CT, and Health Equity Solutions, members of the CT Coalition for Choice, partnered with NIRH on legislative priorities related to “crisis pregnancy centers” or “fake clinics” and access to doula care. As a part of the CT Coalition for Choice, Hartford GYN Center supported a bill to regulate deceptive advertising practices utilized by crisis pregnancy centers across the state of Connecticut, which was drafted with support from NIRH and spearheaded by NARAL CT. This bill expanded upon work NIRH supported in past years, including public education campaigns on the manipulative and dishonest practices of CPCs and a local ordinance in Hartford to regulate the deceptive practices employed by CPCs. The CT Coalition for Choice held an effective lobby day that featured advocacy and testimony workshops for medical students, clinic escorts, and other grassroots supporters. This bill made it through the Public Health Committee and passed a House vote. Unfortunately, the bill was not called in the Senate before the session ended. In 2017, Hartford GYN Center & NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut partnered to educate the public on the manipulative and dishonest practices of CPCs and mobilized a grassroots base resulting in the successful passage of a local ordinance that will require crisis pregnancy centers (CPCs) in Hartford to disclose whether or not they have a medical provider available to provide the services they offer.
